Story Time Advice

Averages, hours and why we tell non-affiliates to stream less, not more.

The worst advice we have heard given to non-affiliates is this; “Go live and stay live for a good 8 – 12 hours, this gives people time to find you and get to know you”.

Long streams are your enemy! The biggest hurdle for affiliation is the Concurrent Viewer Average over the last 30 days. This average is worked out PER MINUTE by Twitch analytics.

It takes the number of live, active viewers in your stream, and calculates that into an hourly figure. This also gets weighed against your total hours to then adjust your concurrent average up of down.

Confused? Yep, me too, and that’s why most streamers gloss over this information and move on, but it’s the critical bit. Let’s look at it in real life situations and it’s easier to grasp.

Streamer Bob decided to join a follow for follow community, has 3.5k followers, 200 hours streamed in the last 30 days, and an average of 0.2. Streamer Sarah has just started, has 50 followers, 2 hours streamed, and an average of 0.2.

Here’s the difference, with Bobs total hours compared to Sarahs, you would need 100 times the amount of people to watch him as Sarah, to have exactly the same result.

The higher you make your total hours, the harder it is to help you, we need more and more people to have an effect. Help yourself, and us, by keeping your total hours between 50 and 60 over the last 30 days.
